Indigenous Skills

What a fascinating month sharing and learning with this incredible family ~ important indigenous foods and primal skills like butchering, ancient meat preservation techniques and the process of tanning and preserving the skins and pelts in a traditional way to honour the animal.

Studying a little bit of astronomy and making some pretty funky sun dials and leather pouches. Exploring ways to cook food with just the sun using ‘mirror’ ovens. Very successful technique surprisingly!

We also compared some of these skills with local Amazigh friends who have different traditions ~ reflecting upon times not too long ago when life was mostly self-sufficient and electricity free. It was a rich learning experience for all involved.

All this led to us sharing perspectives on food development, organic grass fed animal products compared to industrial farming techniques and the consequences that this has had on our collective health ~ which has been extremely valuable for our children. Insights into how far we have come in the western world from our indigenous roots and from a life entwined with Mother Earth.

Gratitude for the amazing families that bring so much richness to our children’s education ~  who are so generous with their knowledge and time to pass on important perspectives and skills to our family.

A lot of delicious meals were shared in the process!
